Kitchen Renovation Project addendum - remember that fireplace we ordered...?
Well... we ordered the new fireplace mantel at the beginning of July. It was delivered to the store at the end of September (in accordance with the original 8-12 week estimate). A very large box (purported to be the mantel, see below) arrived unannounced at our house on 11 November. After some discussion with store management we finally got on the schedule for installation just in time for Xmas. Installation will actually be in two parts - the mantel goes in first, then they come back in and install the hearth stone and marble surround.
First part is pretty much complete. Jimmy the superinstaller and his trusty aide Keith built the hearth base and installed the mantel today. Still need a little trim work but we now have a real good idea how the final product is going to look!
The mystery package. We were told not to accept delivery without the project manager present but we didn't want to lose any more time so we accepted it but left it in the box. Whatever is in the box adorned our family room for about six weeks until Jimmy came over to unwrap it a week before Xmas! Notice we now have painted and added some furniture (a story for another day perhaps).

Jimmy the superinstaller unwrapping the mystery package --- now identified as our long ago ordered fireplace mantel. Whew, it could have been a duck!

The decanted/unwrapped mantel, apparently intact, taking a nap on the floor prior to installation...

Keith and part of Jimmy laying out and installing the hearth base. Curved front was my idea, Jimmy thanked me for this profusely (I assume what he was saying under his breathe was thanks...).

Installing the mantel around the hearth base. The wall above the mantel wasn't exactly straight which made this part of the installation more complicated than we all would have liked.

The completed install with a view of the bar in the kitchen. Floor and matching cabinets really tie the kitchen and the family room together (which was the plan of course)...

Phase one complete. Jimmy, installer extraordinaire, came back this morning to caulk and install the baseboard trim. We moved the furniture back in for now, only thing left to do is sweep the floor and do some touch up painting... Ray called this afternoon re phase two, he needs to touch base with designer Terry to clarify the tile/stone selection. More to follow...
