First we had to move all the furniture out (to include that little baby grand piano). We had ordered a new entertainment cabinet so we decided to move the existing very large and very heavy cherry one down into the basement. Before we did this, however, I had to deinstall the even larger and heavier oak entertainment center down in the basement to make room. We called Salvation Army, they were happy (?) to come out and take away the big old oak entertainment center from the basement, whew!
Since we were emptying out the living room, we also decided to replace the existing baseboards in the living room. So while we were working on emptying out the living room, I went to Home Depot and bought some new baseboards. In between moving furniture I ripped out the old baseboards and painted the new ones. Then we had some carpenters come out to cut and install the new baseboards. Somewhere during the same time we were moving furniture and playing with the baseboards, we also had some electricians come out to fish new speaker cables under the floor so we could install a 7.1 audio system in the living room. We also had them move one electrical receptacle and install another one so that they would be available but behind the new entertainment center we had ordered.
Finally we were ready to have the new carpet installed. The carpet folks did a great job. They took out the old carpet and padding in about five minutes. Putting the new carpet took a little bit longer, there was a tricky seam in the middle of the room they had to deal with.
Last step major step was to move all the furniture back in. We had to wait a few weeks for the new entertainment center to show up, this gave me some time to run the new speaker lines up through walls and install the speakers.

Step 1 - Emptying out the furniture and replacing the baseboards. The new baseboards are a bit taller and thicker than the originals. This is the third set we have installed, we are replacing them all over the house, one room at a time.

New baseboards installed, all the furniture gone. Angela is remarkably calm...

Old carpet gone, installing the new padding.

New padding installed and tucked under the new baseboards, nice fit!

Moving back in, it was so fun moving the baby grand piano in and out...

Moved back in, bookcase reloaded, piano back on its legs...

Moved back in, another view. Note new (much smaller) entertainment center/cabinet hidden behind the stairs on the left.
